Let's learn how to make this super easy marinara sauce with ground beef
First of all, you are going to create a base layer of flavor for the sauce by sautéing some diced onion in lots of olive oil until quite soft and starting to caramelize. Have you ever had someone walk into your kitchen when you're literally just cooking onions and ask you what you're making because it smells SO good? That's the power of caramelized onions.
Once the onions are nice and flavorful you add chopped garlic and a few other dried spices, and cook until fragrant – you don't have to cook them for too long because they will continue to sauté alongside the ground beef.
Once the spices are aromatic you can kind of push the onions and spices to the side of the pan to make room for the ground beef. Add the ground beef and season it generously with salt and pepper. Break up the meat and stir in onions and garlic, until meat is browned and cooked through – this should take about 5 minutes.
Then you add a big jar of CLEAN store bought marinara sauce. I emphasize the clean because a lot of store bought pasta sauces are made with added sugar and highly processed vegetable oils. But there are some good brands out there that I love! You can check labels at the store for the sauces available to you, but I typically reach for the Whole Foods organic Marinara brand, or Thrive Market's Marinara sauce brand. Both are affordable, organic, and considered Paleo + Whole30 friendly.
After that the sauce can just simmer for about 15 minutes or so, until it's darkened in color ever-so-slightly and all the flavors have gotten real comfortable with each other! Season it with a tiny splash of red or white wine vinegar (not necessary, but it makes the flavors POP just a little bit extra), more salt and pepper to taste, and VIOLA. Crazy delicious, healthy, SUPER DUPER EASY marinara sauce with ground beef is SERVED 💯
Description
This super easy marinara sauce with ground beef is a healthy, short cut version of a classic full flavored meat sauce! Ready in 30 minutes FLAT for a healthy meal option that's gluten free, paleo, and whole30 friendly.
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 onion, diced small
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- pinch of chili flakes (optional)
- about 1 pound grass fed ground beef
- freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 25 oz jar of clean marinara sauce* (see notes)
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- Heat olive oil over medium heat. When hot add diced onion with 1/2 teaspoon sea salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes – or until onions are soft and starting to brown.
- Add garlic and dried spices – oregano, basil, and dried chili if using, and cook for another minute or so, until spices are fragrant.
- Move onions to the side and make space in the center of the pan. Add ground beef and press into a thin layer. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt and a generous amount of freshly ground black pepper.
- Cook, breaking up meat and stirring in onions and garlic, until meat is browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes.
- Add marinara sauce, and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer – reducing heat if necessary. Simmer for about 15 minutes, until sauce is slightly reduced and darkened about 1 shade in color.
- Add the tablespoon of red wine vinegar and stir to combine. Simmer for another minute or two, until the smell of vinegar has disappeared.
- Taste and season with salt and pepper if desired. Serve over your favorite pasta, roasted sweet potatoes, or spiralized veggie noodles!
Notes
- Clean marinara sauce means a pasta sauce that is free from added sugar and highly processed vegetables oils LIKE soybean oil, canola oil, or rapeseed oil. Check your labels before you pick out a jar! Whole Foods carries a great organic brand, as does Thrive Market.
